Specifying a pet bed programme
Beds carry the highest ticket of any soft good in a pet range and the worst freight economics. A bed is mostly air, and air costs the same to ship as product. The programmes that work are the ones where the construction decision and the packing decision were made together, not in sequence.
The second thing that decides a bed programme is washability. Pet beds are bought once and judged every month, and the review that sinks a listing is almost always about what happened in the machine.
Construction routes and what each one suits
| Build | Who buys it | What decides quality | Freight note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calming donut | The dominant round-bed silhouette in the West | Fill weight, pile height, base grip | Compresses well, vacuum pack it |
| Bolster high-wall | Cold months, dogs that lean | Wall stiffness, inner frame, seam strength | Bulky; flat-pack the walls if the design allows |
| Orthopaedic mattress | Senior dogs, premium tier | Foam density and ILD, cover zip quality | Heavy but flat, ships better than it looks |
| Memory foam sofa | High-ticket home-furniture positioning | Foam layers, frame, removable cover | The hardest to ship economically |
| Mat and pad | Crates, cars, second beds | Fill distribution, edge binding | The cheapest to ship, good bundle filler |
| Cave or semi-enclosed | Cats, anxious small dogs | Shape retention after washing | Compresses, but shape recovery must be tested |
| Felt or flat-pack house | Design-led buyers, Scandinavian look | Felt density, joint method | Ships flat, which is why it works |
Ask what the bed looks like after the third wash, not the first. Fill migration and shape loss show up on the third cycle.
What belongs in the specification
- Fill weight in grams, not just the fill type. Two beds both described as polyester fibre can differ by 40 percent in fill, and that is the entire difference the customer feels.
- Foam density and ILD, for orthopaedic claims. If the listing says orthopaedic or memory foam, the density figure is what supports it. Without it the claim is decoration.
- Cover removal method. Full-perimeter zip, partial zip, or non-removable. A non-removable cover on a dog bed is a design decision you should make deliberately, not by omission.
- Wash instructions you have actually tested. Specify the temperature and cycle, then ask the factory to run it three times and photograph the result.
- Base material and grip. A bed that slides across a wooden floor is returned regardless of how comfortable it is.
- Compressed carton dimensions. Ask for them at quotation stage. They decide whether the programme is viable by sea.
Testing your retailer may ask about
Beds are textiles with a fill, so the questions are about chemistry, flammability and what survives washing. We arrange these per order and supply the report.
- REACH SVHC and azo dye screening on the cover fabric and binding.
- Formaldehyde content on treated fabrics.
- Flammability, where your market or retailer applies a furnishing standard to pet beds.
- Dimensional stability and appearance after repeated washing, which is the test that predicts reviews.
- Fill composition verification, so that what is on the label is what is inside.
What goes wrong on a first order
- Sampling in one size and scaling the pattern. Fill behaves differently at size L; the large sample is the one worth paying for.
- Printing a wash label the bed cannot survive. Test the cycle you print.
- Choosing a cover fabric by hand-feel alone. Ask for the pilling grade after abrasion, or the bed will look tired in two months.
- Quoting by unit and forgetting volumetric freight. For beds the cubic metre is the number that matters.
- Launching only the large size because it carries the best margin. Small and medium are where the volume is.
Send us the specification and we will come back with factory options, the MOQ that actually applies and a sample route. Request a quotation or read the terms of supply first.
How Petlland Works
Sourcing
We match your specification to one of 60+ audited partner factories rather than pushing a single factory's catalogue.
Private label
Logo, Pantone, hardware and retail packaging from 100 pieces, with tooling quoted separately where a mould is needed.
Quality control
AQL sampling inspection before shipment, with a photo report you receive before goods leave the factory.
Consolidation & DDP
Multiple suppliers consolidated into one shipment and delivered to the location you designate, door-to-door in many regions.
