Specifying a pet ID tag programme
ID tags are the highest-margin small item in a pet range and the one with the most personalisation value per gram. They are also operationally awkward: every unit is different, engraving is a production step rather than a finishing touch, and the data has to travel from your checkout to the engraver without being retyped.
Decide early whether you are selling a blank tag that the retailer engraves, or a made-to-order tag engraved at source. They are different businesses with different lead times.
Materials and what each one gives you
| Material | Character | Engraving method | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | The universal default, corrosion resistant | Laser or rotary | Grade matters: 304 holds up, lower grades pit |
| Solid brass | Heritage look, real weight, patinas over time | Rotary engraving reads best | Tarnish is a feature to some buyers and a complaint from others |
| Zinc alloy with enamel | Colour, shapes, rhinestones, gifting | Laser on the reverse plate | Plating wear on a tag that knocks against a bowl |
| Anodised aluminium | Bright colours, very light, low cost | Laser, which burns through the anodised layer | Colour fades in sunlight over a season or two |
| Silicone | Silent by design, waterproof, no jingle | Moulded or debossed, not engraved | Answers the complaint that metal tags rattle all day |
| QR or NFC | Links to a hosted profile page | Printed or laser code plus a chip | You are now running a service, not just selling a tag |
A silent tag and a heritage brass tag sell to the same owner for different dogs. Carrying both is usually better than choosing.
What belongs in the specification
- Character limits per line, per size. Not per tag. A buyer who can type an address that will not fit has already generated a support ticket.
- Font and depth. Shallow laser marking on stainless reads beautifully and wears off a working dog within a year. Specify depth if legibility over time matters.
- Split ring or S-hook, and its gauge. Tags are lost at the ring far more often than they break. A thin split ring is a false economy.
- Thickness in millimetres. Tag diameter is what customers see; thickness is what they feel, and it is where cost is quietly removed.
- Whether the reverse is left blank. A blank reverse lets a retailer add a phone number later. A pre-filled reverse does not.
- How the engraving data reaches the factory. A spreadsheet per batch, a feed, or a file naming convention. Agree the format before the first order, not during it.
Testing your retailer may ask about
Tags sit against the coat and are mouthed by other animals in the household, so the chemistry questions are the ones that come up. We arrange testing per order.
- Nickel release, the test most often requested on plated and alloy tags.
- Lead and cadmium content, particularly on zinc alloy and enamel.
- REACH SVHC screening on coatings and enamels.
- Salt-spray hours on plated finishes, if your market is coastal.
- For NFC or QR tags, you also need a privacy position on the hosted data, which is a legal question in the EU rather than a testing one.
What goes wrong on a first order
- Launching personalisation without a proof step. One screen showing the customer their own text on the tag shape removes most engraving complaints.
- Choosing a shape that will not sit flat. Stars and leaves photograph well and spin on the ring.
- Ordering engraved stock. Engraved inventory is dead inventory; hold blanks and engrave to order.
- Underestimating the ring. Order spare split rings with every batch, they are the part that gets lost first.
- Forgetting non-Latin characters. If you sell into more than one market, confirm the engraver handles accented and non-Latin text before you promise it.
Send us the specification and we will come back with factory options, the MOQ that actually applies and a sample route. Request a quotation or read the terms of supply first.
How Petlland Works
Sourcing
We match your specification to one of 60+ audited partner factories rather than pushing a single factory's catalogue.
Private label
Logo, Pantone, hardware and retail packaging from 100 pieces, with tooling quoted separately where a mould is needed.
Quality control
AQL sampling inspection before shipment, with a photo report you receive before goods leave the factory.
Consolidation & DDP
Multiple suppliers consolidated into one shipment and delivered to the location you designate, door-to-door in many regions.
