Specifying a dog toy programme

Toys are the category where a sourcing mistake has the clearest consequence. A collar that is poorly made disappoints; a toy that is poorly made comes apart in a dog mouth. Everything in a toy specification should be read as a safety specification first and a product specification second.

Commercially the category splits three ways: durable chews that sell on how long they last, interactive and enrichment toys that sell on what they do to a bored dog, and novelty that sells on how it looks in a photograph. These need different factories, different testing and different marketing, so decide which one you are building.

Material routes and what each one suits

MaterialTypical useWhat decides qualityFailure mode to test for
Natural rubberChews, treat dispensers, fetchRubber grade and wall thicknessTearing from the opening
TPRDental chews, bounce toysShore hardness and filler contentBecoming brittle with age
ETPUHigh-rebound training ballsBead fusion and skin integritySurface splitting on impact
EVA foamFlying discs, soft fetchDensity and edge finishChunks torn from the rim
Nylon weave and ropeTug, dental, set componentsFibre count and end bindingIngested loose strands
Plush, no-stuffingSqueaky toys, comfortSeam strength and squeaker housingSqueaker reached through a seam
VinylNovelty shapes, seasonal collectionsWall thickness, phthalate-free compoundSplitting at the mould line
Snuffle fabricEnrichment, slow feedingBase backing and fleece attachmentStrips pulled free and swallowed

Shape freedom is highest in vinyl and plush, which is exactly why those two need the strictest small-parts testing.

What belongs in the specification

  • Chew level, stated honestly. Gentle, moderate or power chewer. Selling a moderate toy as indestructible generates returns and, eventually, a safety complaint.
  • Wall thickness at the thinnest point. Not the average. The thinnest point is where the toy will fail.
  • Squeaker housing and retention. A squeaker reachable through one seam is a choking hazard. Specify a housing, not a loose insert.
  • Size ladder against dog weight. A toy small enough to pass the back of the throat of the largest dog you sell to is the wrong size, whatever the packaging says.
  • Any coating, flavour or scent. Flavoured chews bring a food-contact question with them. Declare the additive at sampling.
  • Whether parts are removable by design. Removable rope ends, caps and plugs all need their own pull-off test figure.

Testing your retailer may ask about

Pet toys are not covered by the EU toy safety directive, which applies to children, but serious retailers apply equivalent mechanical thinking anyway. We arrange these per order and supply the report.

  • Small parts and choking assessment against the size ladder you are selling.
  • Tension and torque testing on any attached part, reported as the force at which it separates.
  • Phthalate and heavy metal screening, which is the standard ask on vinyl and soft plastics.
  • REACH SVHC screening on compounds and dyes.
  • Food-contact testing where the toy dispenses or holds treats.
  • Chew and tear simulation, which is the test that predicts the reviews.

What goes wrong on a first order

  • Using the word indestructible. Nothing is, and the claim converts an ordinary failure into a complaint about you.
  • Sampling a toy with a gentle dog. Give the sample to the hardest chewer you can find for two weeks.
  • Launching one size. A toy range without a size ladder is a safety problem waiting for its largest customer.
  • Treating the squeaker as a component rather than a hazard.
  • Adding a flavour late and not re-testing. A new additive is a new food-contact question.

Send us the specification and we will come back with factory options, the MOQ that actually applies and a sample route. Request a quotation or read the terms of supply first.

How Petlland Works

Sourcing

We match your specification to one of 60+ audited partner factories rather than pushing a single factory's catalogue.

Private label

Logo, Pantone, hardware and retail packaging from 100 pieces, with tooling quoted separately where a mould is needed.

Quality control

AQL sampling inspection before shipment, with a photo report you receive before goods leave the factory.

Consolidation & DDP

Multiple suppliers consolidated into one shipment and delivered to the location you designate, door-to-door in many regions.
