Specifying a pet blanket programme

Blankets are the easiest entry into a soft-goods range: low tooling, low minimums, fast sampling, and almost everything that differentiates them is print or weave rather than engineering. That is also the problem. Without an exclusive print or a functional layer, a blanket is a commodity competing on price.

The two routes out are function, waterproof backing, cooling gel, self-heating layers, and design, jacquard or an exclusive print range you own. Most successful programmes pick one and commit.

Construction routes and what each one gives you

A waterproof blanket is the highest-ticket format in this series because it solves a household problem rather than a pet one.

What belongs in the specification

• GSM, per face. A double-sided blanket has two weights. Quoting one figure hides which side was thinned.
• Print method and repeat. Digital print suits short runs and many designs; rotary suits volume in few designs. The repeat length decides how much fabric is wasted on a small item.
• Edge finish. Overlock, bound or stitched hem. The edge is where a blanket starts to fail and where cost is most often removed.
• Membrane specification, for waterproof. TPU or PU, and whether the waterproofing survives the wash cycle you intend to print on the label.
• Shrinkage allowance. Fleece shrinks. State the finished size after one wash, not the cut size.
• Whether you own the print. If the factory supplies the artwork, so can it to your competitor. Commission the print if differentiation is the plan.

Testing your retailer may ask about

Blankets are simple textiles, and the testing questions reflect that. We arrange these per order.

• REACH SVHC, azo dye and formaldehyde screening.
• Colour fastness to washing, rubbing and light, which is what keeps a printed blanket looking new.
• Pilling resistance after abrasion cycles.
• Dimensional stability after washing, reported as a shrinkage percentage.
• Waterproof integrity before and after washing, where a barrier claim is being made.

What goes wrong on a first order

• Ordering a stock print and calling it a collection. If the factory can sell the same artwork to anyone, you have bought inventory, not a brand.
• Printing a size on the label without allowing for shrinkage.
• Claiming waterproof after testing the fabric but not the seams.
• Launching cooling mats into a northern winter. The counter-season is a real advantage only if you plan it.
• Choosing a dark print for light-coated dogs without a rub fastness test.
