Specifying pet bowls and feeders
Bowls look like the simplest product in a pet range and are among the most awkward to ship. They are heavy, they break, and the freight line often costs more than the goods. Everything in a bowl programme should be read through that lens: the material decision, the packing decision and the consolidation decision are the same decision.
The upside is that bowls photograph as homeware, not as pet equipment, which makes them unusually good at carrying a brand look across a range.
Material routes and what each one costs you in freight
| Material | Character | Breakage and freight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304 stainless | Hygienic, dent resistant, dishwasher safe | Light and unbreakable, the easiest to ship | Volume staples and slow feeders |
| Glazed ceramic | Reads as homeware, heavy enough not to slide | Heaviest and most fragile, needs real packing | Premium tier and brand photography |
| Melamine | Colour and pattern freedom at low cost | Light, robust, cheap to ship | Entry tier and character ranges |
| Food-grade PP | Light, cheap, good for travel and slow feeders | Very low freight cost | Travel, gravity feeders, puzzle bowls |
| Bamboo or wood stand | Raised feeders with a furniture look | Bulky; flat-pack if you can | Elevated sets, high ticket |
| Silicone | Collapsible, non-slip, travel-friendly | Packs flat, almost free to ship | Gift-with-purchase and bundle components |
For ceramic, ask for the carton drop-test result rather than the carton specification. The specification tells you what was ordered; the drop test tells you what survives.
What belongs in the specification
- Capacity in millilitres and the internal diameter. Volume alone does not tell a flat-faced breed owner whether their dog can reach the bottom.
- The food-contact declaration you need. EU food-contact (Regulation 1935/2004) and FDA are different documents. Name the one your market needs before sampling.
- Glaze chemistry, for ceramic. Lead and cadmium migration is the test that matters, and it is glaze-specific, so a new colour means a new test.
- The non-slip base. A silicone ring, a moulded foot or nothing at all. On hard floors this is the difference between a good review and a bad one.
- Slow-feeder geometry. Ridge height and spacing should match the kibble size the market actually feeds, otherwise the bowl either does nothing or frustrates the dog.
- Carton quantity and gross weight. Confirm these before you commit, because they decide your landed cost more than the unit does.
Testing your retailer may ask about
Bowls are food-contact articles, so this is the one category in the range where the documentation question comes before the design question. We arrange testing per order and supply the report.
- Food-contact migration testing to the regulation your destination market applies.
- Lead and cadmium migration on glazed ceramic, per glaze colour.
- Dishwasher cycle testing, if the listing claims dishwasher safe.
- Material identification on stainless, to confirm the grade quoted is the grade supplied.
- Carton drop and compression testing, which for this category is a quality test, not a logistics formality.
What goes wrong on a first order
- Quoting ceramic by unit cost and discovering the freight afterwards. Ask for the landed figure per carton from the start.
- Claiming dishwasher safe without testing it. Glaze crazing after thirty cycles is a refund and a review.
- Launching a slow feeder without naming the kibble size it suits.
- Testing one glaze colour and shipping four. Each colour is a different chemistry.
- Packing ceramic in the retail box only. A colour box is marketing, not transit protection.
Send us the specification and we will come back with factory options, the MOQ that actually applies and a sample route. Request a quotation or read the terms of supply first.
How Petlland Works
Sourcing
We match your specification to one of 60+ audited partner factories rather than pushing a single factory's catalogue.
Private label
Logo, Pantone, hardware and retail packaging from 100 pieces, with tooling quoted separately where a mould is needed.
Quality control
AQL sampling inspection before shipment, with a photo report you receive before goods leave the factory.
Consolidation & DDP
Multiple suppliers consolidated into one shipment and delivered to the location you designate, door-to-door in many regions.
