Specifying a grooming brush programme
Grooming tools are the best bundle components in a pet range: low unit cost, high demonstrability, and they sell alongside almost everything else. They are also one of the few categories where a genuine safety claim is available to you, because the difference between a pin with a rounded tip and one without is something a customer feels on the first stroke.
The decision that matters is the pin, not the handle. Handles differentiate the photograph; pins differentiate the review.
Brush types and what each one is for
| Type | Coat it suits | What decides quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slicker, self-cleaning | Most coats, the category default | Pin angle, tip finish, the retraction mechanism | The format buyers search for by name |
| Pin and bristle double side | Everyday maintenance | Pin seating in the cushion, bristle density | Two tools in one at a sharp price |
| Cushion pin brush | Long coats, finishing | Cushion rebound, pin length consistency | Wooden handle signals salon quality |
| Silicone glove | Short coats, bath time, nervous dogs | Nub height and glove fit | Very affordable and converts well on video |
| Bath and massage brush | Shampooing | Softness and grip when wet | Natural bundle component |
| Spray-mist brush | Loose-hair control | Nozzle consistency, reservoir seal | Clear pain point with a clear demonstration |
| Microfibre towel | Post-bath | GSM and absorbency, not size | Bundles naturally with every brush |
| Bamboo handled | Sustainability-led ranges | Moisture resistance of the bamboo | Supports a credible eco story |
A self-cleaning slicker lives or dies on the button. Ask for the cycle count the mechanism is tested to.
What belongs in the specification
- Pin tip finish. Rounded, polished or cut. A cut tip scratches skin and is the single most common cause of a one-star grooming review.
- Pin material and gauge. Stainless resists bending and rusting; cheaper wire does neither. State the gauge as well as the material.
- Pin angle and length. The angle decides which coat the brush actually works on. A short straight pin will not reach an undercoat whatever the listing says.
- Cushion rebound. The rubber cushion is what lets pins give way over a bony shoulder. A hard cushion turns a brush into a rake.
- Handle material and grip when wet. Most grooming happens around a bath. A handle that is comfortable dry and slippery wet has failed.
- Head size options. One head size fits one dog size. A two-size range covers far more of the market for very little extra tooling.
Testing your retailer may ask about
Grooming tools touch skin and are handled by the owner, so the questions are chemical and mechanical. We arrange these per order and supply the report.
- Sharp-point and sharp-edge inspection, which is the test that supports a rounded-tip claim.
- Pin retention, measured as the force needed to pull a pin from the cushion.
- REACH SVHC screening on handles, coatings and silicone.
- Nickel release on plated metal parts.
- Mechanism cycle testing on self-cleaning and retractable heads.
What goes wrong on a first order
- Buying on handle looks. The photograph sells the handle and the customer reviews the pins.
- Claiming suitable for all coats. It is never true, and it attracts the returns of everyone it is not true for.
- Skipping the sharp-point test and then writing gentle on the packaging.
- Choosing bamboo for a wet-use tool without a moisture-resistant finish.
- Ordering one head size, then finding the reviews are all from owners of a different sized dog.
Send us the specification and we will come back with factory options, the MOQ that actually applies and a sample route. Request a quotation or read the terms of supply first.
How Petlland Works
Sourcing
We match your specification to one of 60+ audited partner factories rather than pushing a single factory's catalogue.
Private label
Logo, Pantone, hardware and retail packaging from 100 pieces, with tooling quoted separately where a mould is needed.
Quality control
AQL sampling inspection before shipment, with a photo report you receive before goods leave the factory.
Consolidation & DDP
Multiple suppliers consolidated into one shipment and delivered to the location you designate, door-to-door in many regions.
