Specifying a dog harness programme
Harnesses carry a higher ticket than collars and a higher return rate, and both come from the same cause: fit. A harness that pulls across the shoulder, rides up into the armpit or cannot be adjusted far enough goes back. Getting the geometry and the size ladder right is worth more than any material upgrade you can specify.
The category also splits sharply by buyer. A step-in mesh vest and a tactical MOLLE harness share almost nothing except the word harness, and they sell to different people at different prices. Decide which one you are building before you compare quotations.
Harness types and what each one sells to
| Type | Who buys it | Design points that matter | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step-in mesh vest | Small and toy breeds, first-time owners | Breathable mesh, soft binding, two adjusters | Highest volume, lowest ticket, very print-friendly |
| Y-front no-choke | Owners following veterinary advice | Y geometry clear of the trachea, five points of adjustment | The easiest expert story to tell in copy |
| Padded Oxford vest | Medium and large breeds, everyday walking | Chest plate shape, foam density, reflective piping | The benchmark silhouette on marketplaces |
| No-pull dual attachment | Trainers and pullers | Front ring placement, webbing that resists stretch | Redirects pulling instead of fighting it |
| Tactical MOLLE | Working-dog and large-breed owners | Load-rated handle, patch panel, metal hardware | Highest ticket, lowest return rate |
| Mobility support | Senior dogs and post-surgery | Lift handle position, weight distribution, washability | Underserved, emotionally driven, premium pricing |
| Cat and small-pet | Cat walking, a fast-growing niche | Escape-proof geometry, very light hardware | Strong in Japan, Korea and Australasia |
A harness is assembled from more components than a collar, so the tooling question is usually about the buckles and adjusters rather than the fabric.
What belongs in the specification
- Chest girth ranges, measured flat. State the range for each size and whether it is measured on the garment or on the dog. Half the sizing disputes we see come from the two being confused.
- Number and position of adjusters. Two-point adjustment fits a narrow band of dogs. Four or five points is what lets one size cover a real range of chests.
- Webbing width and elongation. A webbing that stretches under load turns a no-pull harness into an ordinary one. Ask for the elongation figure, not just the width.
- Buckle load rating and placement. Specify where the dog can reach. A chest-mounted buckle a determined dog can mouth is a safety problem, not a styling choice.
- Handle construction, if there is one. A control or lift handle is a load-bearing part. It needs its own stitch pattern and its own test figure.
- Reflective coverage. Say how many sides and roughly how much of the perimeter. Reflective piping on the front only looks fine in photographs and does nothing on a dark road.
Testing your retailer may ask about
The mechanical figures matter more here than on any other soft good in the range, because a harness failure is a dog in traffic. We can arrange the following per order and hand you the report.
- Static pull test on the assembled harness, with the failure point named, not just the load.
- Buckle and adjuster cycle testing, which catches plastic that becomes brittle before the webbing wears.
- REACH SVHC and azo dye screening on fabrics, binding and padding.
- Nickel release on any metal that sits against the coat.
- Colour fastness to rubbing and to water, which is what stops a dark harness marking a light-coated dog.
What goes wrong on a first order
- Copying a competitor size chart without checking it against the breeds in your market. Dachshund and French bulldog chests break most generic ladders.
- Launching without a fitting guide. A short video or a two-step diagram on the listing cuts returns more than any construction change.
- Specifying mesh for a market with cold wet winters. Breathable mesh is a summer material; a padded Oxford build sells better from October.
- Treating the handle as decoration. If the listing photo shows someone lifting the dog by it, the handle needs to be tested for that.
- Ordering one size only to keep the MOQ down, then discovering the size that sells is the one you did not make.
Send us the specification and we will come back with factory options, the MOQ that actually applies and a sample route. Request a quotation or read the terms of supply first.
