Dog Leashes we supply

Specifying a dog leash programme

Leads are the natural second product in a walking range and the easiest way to lift average order value, because almost nobody buys a collar or harness without one. They are also the product where cost and quality diverge most quietly: two leads can look identical in a photograph and behave completely differently once a 30 kg dog hits the end of one.

The decision that drives everything else is the attachment. Snap hooks, swivels and welded rings are where leads fail, and they are the component buyers least often specify.

Lead length is a market decision, not a default. 1.2 m suits dense European cities; 1.8 m is the North American expectation.

What belongs in the specification

  • Snap hook type and load rating. Bolt snap, trigger snap or carabiner, with the load figure for the one you choose. A hook that opens under side load is the most common leash failure there is.
  • Swivel, and whether it is a real one. Many cheap leads use a fixed ring that looks like a swivel. On a coupler, a non-rotating joint guarantees tangles within a week.
  • Length and width together. A 25 mm webbing at 1.8 m is a different product from a 15 mm at 1.2 m. State both, and state which market each is for.
  • Handle padding and inner lining. Neoprene, foam or a folded webbing handle. This is the part the human touches, so it carries more perceived quality than anything else on the lead.
  • Stitch pattern at the hook and handle. Box stitch with a cross, bar-tack count, and thread tex. Ask for all three.
  • Traffic handle, if included. A second handle near the clip needs the same stitching standard as the main one.

Testing your retailer may ask about

As with harnesses, the mechanical report is what a serious buyer asks for. We arrange these per order and supply the laboratory report with it.

  • Tensile test on the finished lead, with the failure point identified.
  • Snap hook load test, separately from the webbing.
  • REACH SVHC and azo dye screening on webbing, rope and handle padding.
  • Nickel release on plated hardware.
  • Colour fastness to water and rubbing, which matters most on light-coloured ropes.

What goes wrong on a first order

  • Matching the lead colour to the collar by eye. Webbing and rope take dye differently; give both suppliers the same Pantone and ask for a lab dip.
  • Buying one length for every market. The length that sells in Amsterdam is not the one that sells in Texas.
  • Ignoring the hook weight on small-dog leads. A hook sized for a labrador drags a chihuahua collar sideways.
  • Bundling a set without checking the hardware matches. A rose gold collar buckle beside a nickel snap hook looks like a mistake, because it is one.
  • Skipping the pull test because the lead looks strong. Braided rope fails at the splice, not in the middle.

Send us the specification and we will come back with factory options, the MOQ that actually applies and a sample route. Request a quotation or read the terms of supply first.
