Specifying dematting and deshedding tools

This is the sharpest category in a pet range, literally. Dematting rakes and deshedding blades work by cutting, and a tool that cuts hair will cut skin if the geometry is wrong. It is also the category with the clearest before-and-after demonstration, which is why it performs so well in short-form video.

Treat the blade as the product and everything else as packaging. Two tools with identical handles can behave completely differently depending on blade pitch and edge treatment.

Tool types and what each one does

Blade guards and rounded tooth ends are not a cost line to remove. They are the reason the product is sellable in the EU.

What belongs in the specification

• Tooth count and pitch, stated numerically. Seventeen-tooth and twenty-six-tooth versions of the same rake suit different coats. Name the count per SKU.
• Edge treatment. Whether the blade is sharpened on one face, both, or deliberately blunted at the tip. This is the safety specification.
• Tooth end finish. Rounded or cut. Ask for a photograph of the tooth end at magnification, not a word in a table.
• Blade steel and hardness. A soft blade dulls within a season and then tears rather than cuts, which is worse than a blunt tool.
• Spine seating. How teeth are fixed into the head. Teeth that loosen are the most common mechanical failure here.
• Guard or cover. A blade cover costs very little and changes how the product reads on a shelf.

• Sharp-edge and sharp-point assessment on the finished tool.
• Tooth pull-out force, to confirm the teeth stay in the head.
• Corrosion resistance on the blade, which matters for a tool used after bathing.
• REACH SVHC screening on handle materials and grips.
• Drop testing, since a dropped rake that loses a tooth becomes a hazard.

What goes wrong on a first order

• Choosing the sharpest sample because it performed best on the demo coat. The sharpest tool is also the one that will reach skin.
• Selling one rake for every coat. Pitch is the product; a single pitch serves one kind of dog.
• Omitting the blade cover to save a few cents, then dealing with the packaging and safety questions it raises.
• Writing gentle on the pack without a sharp-edge report to stand behind it.
• Testing the tool on a groomed sample coat. Ask for the demonstration on a genuinely matted one.
